Hi! My name is Ian Backstrom.

I’m a runner, hiker, musician, scientist, writer, partner, and dog dad—just to name a few!

I started Full Soul Running because I love outdoor movement and want to help others enjoy it too, in whatever way works best for them.

I believe that running, hiking, and walking can feel like a natural, rewarding, and flexible part of your life. One of the best ways to find happiness and longevity as a runner/hiker is to find a realistic way to fit it into your life and to keep your reasons for doing it—your "why"—front and centre. I love helping people explore (or rediscover) the joy of moving their bodies outside and feeling more connected to themselves and nature.

If you’d like to work with me directly through coaching or guided runs, please book a free 20-minute chat or contact me to get started. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

My experience

I am proud that I still feel excited and joyful about most of my everyday runs—which make up the vast majority of time spent as a runner. To me, that is my greatest achievement.

I’m a UESCA-certified running coach and have helped multiple people bring running into their lives in ways that feel good for them. For one person, that might mean running one 13k race a year. For another, it might mean finishing several 50k races in a season. And for another, it might mean offering motivation to get back out on slow, short runs after dealing with injury.

I am certified in remote first aid and CPR.

I am also a member of the core team at Coast Mountain Trail Running (CMTR), helping behind the scenes before and on race day to make these events the best they can be. If you have attended one of these races in the last few years, you may have seen me out on course or at the finish line!

Aside from racing, I spend countless long days exploring the rugged trails and peaks of the North Shore mountains. I’ve also done multiple week-long solo backpacking trips in Arizona and in the mountains north of Pemberton.

While I believe 95-100% of running exists in the day-to-day, as a practice of spending time with your mind and body, I also recognize that races and other tangible achievements are often meaningful and can help provide context for experience. With that in mind, I have listed some of my races and other notable runs below.
